Anime Synopsis and Review - Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Episode 4

Episode 4 is the end of the first story arc and continues from the end of episode 3 with Keiichi talking on the phone with Ooshi and someone approaching at the door, who you figure is Rena, since the shadow that you see resembles her. The doorbell rings and rings and Keiichi, being the paranoid freak that he is, gets even more freaked out and tells Ooishi he will be right back and goes down to the door to see who is at the door. He unlocks the first lock, but the door is still chained and the moment he unlocks the first lock, the door gets pulled open and Rena's eye is there. He is surprised and she tells him that she bought him something for dinner and Keiichi lies to her and tells her that his mother is in the process of making dinner. Rena asks him if she's really doing that and Keiichi lies again and tells her that she is and Rena asks him why, why he would lie, but Keiichi tells her that he isn't and then Rena SCREAMS at him that he's a liar. She then proceeds to tell him what he is eating and where exactly he got it. Keiichi freaks out yet again, asking how she could know that but she tells him to open up so she could heat her food up and grabs the chain with her hand and begins to shake it over and over again. Keiichi stares at it and tells her to stop it and go home, but she doesn't listen and just continues to pull on the chain and he repeats it over and over again until he snaps and grabs the door handle and slams the door shut, slamming her hand and fingers in the door and pulling it as tightly as he can. Keiichi screams at her stop it and go home, pulling on the door tighter and tighter and Rena begins to cry through the door that she is sorry if she was fooling around too much and that it hurts and for Keiichi to stop, but he just keeps screaming at her and pulling on the door more and more and Rena keeps saying she's sorry over and over again until she has to pull her poor hand slowly out of the door.

After that, Keiichi runs up the stairs to his room and gets on the phone in his room with Ooishi, who is still waiting and tells him that Rena just stopped by and Ooishi asks if she stopped by to play, but Keiichi says no and then Ooishi tells Keiichi that he lied about the details of Rena's incident back in her old school. Originally, Ooishi had told Keiichi that Rena smashed out the windows of her old school with a bat, but no one was hurt, but now the true story was that there were three victims and that they were the three guys that she used to hang around with. Ooishi tells Keiichi that the incident was so bad that none of the victims would even talk about it or press charges, but one of them was left with permanent eye damage and after that, Rena moved back to Hinamazawa. Of course, Keiichi finds this news shocking, since it is and then it starts to pour rain outside and the wind is blowing his curtains and the power is flickering on and off, so he goes over to them to close the window and just as he does, he looks outside and gasps in horror as he sees Rena standing outside in the pouring rain, staring up at his window saying something that he can't understand. Ooishi is still talking but Keiichi spaces out and focuses on her mouth to see what she's saying and sees that it's, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

In the next scene, it's the next day and Keiichi is at his little school, standing outside swinging his bat. Rena walks by but doesn't even look at him and just goes inside and then Mion walks up, waving and all happy and walks up to Keiichi, who keeps swinging the bat and asks him to stop swinging the bat, which he does, and then looks at Mion, but she repeats it again, and he says that he did stop and she says that's not what she meant. He asks her why he should stop and that he is not bothering anyone, but Mion tells him that he is and that his bat belongs to someone else. Keiichi says he knows, it belongs to a student that transferred. He then tells Mion that he finds it strange that the brother transferred away, but the sister was still here and Mion is surprised and asks him that he knew about Satoko and Satoshi, but Keiichi says that transferring away means being demoned away, but Mion gets quiet before shaking her head and telling him to just stop using the bat and to stop imitating Satoshi and then Keiichi slams his bat on the ground and screams at Mion that he is not anything like Satoshi and he doesn't know anything about Satoshi and that friends do not hide stuff from each other and that's why he and Mion are not friends! Mion gets very hurt by this and tries to say that's not true, but Keiichi cuts her off and tells her that he even knows that she fought with the leader of the dam project in the weeks before his death and then storms away. Mion begins to cry, telling him that he is cruel, but within seconds she is extremely mad and says that it must be that guy that told Keiichi and that the guy forgot the mercy she had shown him and that she would definitely kill him now. Keiichi stops in shock yet again, listening to her say how she is going to kill someone, before he leaves.

On his way home, he senses someone behind him and jumps into the trees and when he looks back out he sees Rena walking up the road behind him wearing her uniform and carrying a machete - yes, a machete. He asks why the hell she's carrying a machete and when he looks back she is gone. He jumps back into the trees, but she is standing behind him and says, "Found you." Keiichi gets scared and tells her to go away but she says her home is in the same direction as his and he asks her why she's carrying a machete then. Rena tells him that she did not help Satoshi before he left and she always regretted that she did not talk to him about his problem, but she would definitely help Keiichi and she would not let him transfer away - she would save him. He then tells her again that it means demoned away, but she tells him she doesn't know what she is talking about and the murderer is not human, Oyashiro-sama decides everything and that's why she returned to Hinamazawa. Keiichi tells her that's not true and she asks him if he doesn't believe in Oyashiro-sama and he asks her how he could believe in such a thing and she tells him that it is real and she will definitely save him - Rena will save him, talking in third person. She then asks him if someone recently apologized to Keiichi for a long time over and over again and he recalls the night before when Rena stood outside his window saying she was sorry in the pouring rain, but he doesn't say anything. She then gets as close to him as she can and it look as if she kisses him, but then she throws back her head and begins to laugh like a psychotic maniac and Keiichi pushes her away and onto the ground before running away, back to his house.

On the way back to his house, not moments after leaving Rena, Keiichi is once again approached by the men that were driving the van that tried to hit him, but this time there are more of them and they are on foot. Keiichi basically runs almost into them and swings his bat, telling them that he will hit them in the head next, but one of them comes up behind him and hits him in the head with his bat and then the scene goes black.

When Keiichi comes to he is in his room and when he sits up, he hears Rena and she tells him to rest. He looks over at her, and she is sitting in his room all calmly and he asks what she is doing there and she tells him that she already called the Director and he will be here soon. Before he can say something else complete, he hears Mion's voice and she opens his door and closes it and comes inside and looks at him and says she was worried for nothing and she was relieved. She then sits next to Keiichi and asks Rena if she called the Director and Rena says that she has. Keiichi asks who the Director is and they tell him that the Director is the Director. They then proceed to say that the Direcor will be happy that Keiichi is into baseball now and Keiichi asks them again, even more paranoid, who the Director is, but they just start laughing, saying that he is who he is. After they calm down, they tell him it is time for the rest of the penalty game for the ohagi homework that Keiichi never completed. The ohagi homework they are referring to is from an earlier episode when Keiichi stayed home and Rena and Mion dropped off some food that they said was for the club and that ended up having a needle in it, so obviously Keiichi didn't finish anything that had to do with it. He asks what thye are talking about and then Rena gets behind him and grabs both of his arms, holding him still and Mion stands up and takes out a syringe and tells him it's for the penalty game. He screams at her again, what is it for and she tells him that he already knows and he demands to know what he already knows, but she tells him again and then he gets a flash of Tomitake being dead and having an unknown drug in his system and then he starts to get even more enraged and afraid and starts to scream at her to stop, but Mion just kneels down in front of him and takes his arm in her hand and proceed to give him a shot of something, but he screams and screams at her to stop, before his eyes go totally crazy and then he has a bunch of quick flashbacks of Mion and Rena and their time together and then it finally goes to him breaking his light and beating them to death with his bat. It shows him hitting the light, bringing it down a bunch of times, hitting Rena's arm, more blood spattering everywhere and him finally finishing.

After that, instead of running away, he gets up and takes his clock down off the wall and gets his note that was hidden inside of it and adds more onto the end of it saying that Mion and Rena were part of the crime ring, as were some men in a white van and the syringe he had there would be taped to the back of it for evidence, but he did not know what was in it. Hearing a knock on the door, the viewers see that there is someone that looks like a doctor standing outside, along with some of the men that were chasing Keiich earlier. After that, he taped both things to the back of clock and hangs it back on his wall before stopping and looking down at the dead bodies of Mion and Rena and crying non-stop, asking why such a thing had to happen, his eyes totally gone and blank. From there, he looks at them for another moment before running downstairs and attempting to sneak out the back, bolting off into the woods, with the weird men running off after him.

Crying the entire awy, he gets ahead of them somehow and runs to the only public phone booth in town and immediately calls Ooishi and tells him that he thought the murderer was human, but he knows better now. Ooishi asks him if something happened and he says yes and Ooishi tells one of his other officers to get a car ready because the patrol won't reach Keiichi in time he fears, but Keiichi continues to go on. Ooishi asks him if the murderer is behind him and Keiichi says that it is, he can feel it following him everywhere he goes and can't get away from it no matter what he does. Ooishi asks who it is and Keiichi tells him that he can't turn around, all the while talking in a very strange trouble and horrible voice, but Ooishi demands that he turns around and just takes a small peak, but Keiichi tells him he can't. At that point, Ooishi gets scared and asks him, "You're not clawing into your own throat, are you?" But it is too late, as you see Keiichi's bloody hand on the glass and he mutters his last words, "I'm sorry," before seemingly dying in the phone booth from ripping out his own throat with his nails.

The episode ends with Ooishi looking at his report book and saying that the the suspect Keiichi killed two of his classmates after calling them to his home and then killed himself afterwards. They found his letter in the clock, but lines were missing out of it and there was something else missing from it, but Ooishi didn't know what. As the viewer, you see that the syringe is missing from the back of the clock and all mentions of the syringe are gone from the note that Keiichi left. The last words on Keiichi's letter are that he doesn't know who did this or why, but he wishes someone would find out the truth.

The end of the fourth episode, but the first season has 26 episodes, so there is more after this. This was a shocking and extremely sad.. uh, episode, though. I wasn't sure what to think or what would happen next. I love Mion and Rena! I knew Keiichi was a sick psycho.. you learn even more later on in the anime, but alas, he is not the only one with murderous intents.
